The BA New Media is giving me the opportunity to study my interests, and to really learn more about myself. I feel like a better designer and coder, and more importantly a better thinker.

ICS Facilities

ICS is housed in a beautiful historic building in the centre of the University campus. It is close to all campus amenities including the students union, the libraries - and some great cafes on Woodhouse Lane. For a 360 tour of the facilities in our building and around campus, click on the links above.

For all students, we’ve provided breakout rooms in the building with multifunction printer/copier/scanner facilities so that you can discuss group project work in an informal but productive space. In addition, MA and PhD students have dedicated study rooms with PCs, the ability to print, copy or scan to the breakout room printer, comfy chairs and lockers so that students can store their belongings while on campus.

The department has a thriving loans service of digital recorders, video cameras, stills cameras and a wide variety of other equipment that students need for the range of project work they do at ICS, including production exercises, assessed pieces and dissertation research.

The TV Studio

The TV Studio

Our TV studio and gallery, with four Hitachi digital cameras on pedestals, is designed to give students maximum flexibility when producing news bulletins.

The studio also has a large green screen area, so that students can insert any background to accompany their stories. The green screen can also be used for single-camera projects.

The Radio Studio

The Radio Studio

Our Burli-equipped radio studio is broadcast-standard and is regularly used to deliver media interviews by University staff. The facilities ensure students enjoy hands-on experience of working in a professional studio environment and prepare them for working in the industry once they have graduated.

Students can also work on their film and new media projects using one of our 40 editing suites, all equipped with the latest Avid video editing software and Photoshop image manipulation software. Our newsroom is equipped with 23 computers running Burli software so that broadcast journalism students have the time and space to finesse their programmes.

New media students enjoy state of the art facilities at ICS, with a dedicated 25-machine new media lab all equipped with the specialist software for web and graphic design, Adobe Creative Suite Master Collection.

Because we know technology is so important to the learning experience we replace all the teaching machines every three years, to make sure students can work on the highest standard equipment and software. What’s more, we know this kind of work doesn’t follow a standard 9-5 pattern, so students can access the building from 8am-6pm throughout the year, with the option of applying for extended access during assessment periods.

The 58-seat Phil Taylor Cinema is very popular with student societies, with films screened twice a week during term-time. It is equipped with high-definition video projection facilities as well as 16- and 35-millimetre film projectors. Dolby digital surround sound completes the viewing experience.
