PhD. TOPIC:

Communicating Diversity or Unity? The Construction of European Identity in Media and Citizen Discourses on Turkey's Accession to the EU

This PhD project explores the ways in which media and citizen discourses on Turkey's accession to the EU frame European identity. The Eastern frontier has played a major role in shaping European unity in the past. The author argues that modern Turkey embodies a continuation of this Eastern frontier in Western perceptions. Discussions around Turkey's EU membership prospects are expected to have a crystallisation effect, resulting in arguments and justifications that reveal perceptions of European identity.
