Jean Monnet European Centre of Excellence
The Jean Monnet European Centre of Excellence at the University of Leeds was inaugurated on 9 March 1999. The Jean Monnet programme stimulates and supports inter-disciplinary research on the EU, teaching and learning about 'European integration' in universities and other higher education establishments, and provides expertise and advice on contemporary policy issues.
The JMECE’s four core founding Jean Monnet chairs (in Business, European Studies, Law and Politics) are part of international research communities that extend into many disciplines, including the humanities, science, computing and medicine.
The JMECE is based in the Institute of Communication Studies in the Faculty of Performance, Visual Arts and Communications. Its research and teaching in ICS reflect its engagement with communication studies. It has particular expertise in communicating Europe, visualising security and liberty, the EU public sphere, citizens and cultures, claims-making and new and old media, and e-governance.
The JMECE :
- Engages with policymakers across the world on contemporary issues, providing expert advice and input to EU agencies and national governments and parliaments
- Provides a forum for independent debate, organising seminars, symposia and conferences for a wide range of bodies, including the public
- Participates in international research networks with academic institutions and private sector industries and organisations
- Participates in regional and local activities in the UK and throughout the EU
- Is a founding member of the SENT network on European studies spanning 70 universities across Europe
JMECE Student Lab
JMECE LAB is a platform designed to create a research network among students, European youth movements and others sharing an interest in the future of Europe.
